Que la depresión no te detenga

Publicado

Debemos identificar nuestras emociones

Don’t let depression stop you

Looking back at what the pandemic has left us almost a year after the first case of Covid-19 in this city, and the beginning of the long confinement, -in addition to the losses-, we would undoubtedly have to talk about the emotional whirlwind that this has meant.

Anguish, stress, depression and anxiety are just some of those disorders that have troubled our heads, for which it has not been enough to look for the right answer in the God’s Word, but it has also been necessary to consult a mental health professional.

How to detect that something is wrong?

The psychotherapist Betsabé Ruizesparza, guides us and says that the most common signs or symptoms to detect a disorder are tachycardia, sudden sweating, the feeling of not being able to breathe or choking, this in case of generalized anxiety.

In depression, there is also sudden crying for no apparent reason, anhedonia, the desire to stay in bed all day, not eating or overeating and low tolerance to frustration.

We must identify our emotions

The expert comments that, when being locked up, it’s of utmost importance to identify if what you are feeling is something that goes beyond what you have previously experienced, that is, to be aware of the emotions and thoughts we have, and above all not to forget to seek professional help. “It is the ideal, today there are online sessions with psychotherapists and psychiatrists who can help you,” says the interviewee.

She also recommends writing daily how you feel, painting, praying or doing any activity through which we can let what ails us flow.

“Even doing simple breathing exercises or activities that require your mindfulness can help you,” that is, we must find what makes us feel at peace.

But knowing how to face a situation like the one the pandemic has presented us will depend on each individual personality, because as they say: each head is a world of its own, so whether it’s with therapy or doing activities that help to clear the mind, we must not forget to always talk to God, who will surely extend his hand to help us move forward and not let the pandemic leave us with a disorder that is difficult to remedy, in addition to the virus.

Exercise saves lives

• Studies: Certified in IFTA (Interactive Fitness Trainers of America)
• Marital status: Single, no children

Exercise saves lives and will give you a life quality you will not get any other way. It’s never too late, and you don’t have to start with something difficult; Something as basic as going for a walk can be done very well and anywhere.

Exercise is for everyone; many studies have proven that most diseases are due to lack of muscle mass, including diabetes, high or low blood pressure, obesity, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and others that can be prevented if the person exercises daily and accumulates muscle mass.

Visionaries (V) What are your specialties or areas of focus in training?

Marisol Tavison (MT): My specialty and focus are on losing weight, gaining muscle mass, and sculpting bodies. I have clients who aspire to be bodybuilders, and that is a service I also offer.

V. How did you get started in the world of personal training?

MT. Since I was little, I have been into sports: basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field.

Then, I got involved in pageantry and catwalks, including Nuestra Belleza El Paso, where I won “Best Bikini Body” and was in the Top 10 out of 50 girls. That same year, I did my first bodybuilding competition, which I loved and where I found my passion for the gym.

V. Why did you choose to be a personal trainer?

MT. My study and learning of the importance of nutrition and exercise motivates me to educate others.

As I learn and grow in this sport, I see more the importance of living a healthy and active life – which everyone needs to have – and it all comes with education, which is my personal goal.

I want to change lives and my mindset from bad to good habits.

V. What are the objectives that can be achieved with your training?

MT. It all depends on the person’s personal goal, but the most common is accumulating muscle mass, which, in the end, is the healthiest thing for everyone, regardless of age or sex. There is no good or lousy goal; at the end of the day, most people want to feel healthy.

Every goal is achievable if the person is willing to work hard to achieve their goals.

V. How do you address people’s motivation and keep them committed to their goals?

MT. From the beginning of the program, I ask them what their goals and objectives are on difficult days (because there will be some). I always remind them why they are doing what they started, whether it is their children or family. I let them know that they are not alone and always have my support in and outside the gym; my phone is always on when they need something, at any time and day. This process is a team one.

V. What advice do you give people to maintain a healthy lifestyle outside the gym?

MT. My best advice is not to try to change everything from one day to the next; that is where the problem is; they change everything and restrict too much too soon, which is why most people return to bad habits. Everything is step by step and little by little so that it is easy for them to achieve those goals. Instead of thinking about eliminating, think about implementing. Implement walking more, drinking more water, eating more vegetables and fruits, etc.

Día Mundial contra el cáncer

Publicado

World Cancer Day

Every diagnosis is different, so the treatment and prognosis are other too.

By: Dr. Bosco Martin McNally Guillén

Each one of our cells maintains a balance in our body. These cells are programmed to perform their function, and when they die, they give rise to another daughter cell; however, when a cell suffers damage to its DNA (genetic mutation), it can lose this harmony, refusing to die, multiplying in an uncontrolled manner and invading different parts of the body, this is what we know as cancer.

Several factors can cause genetic mutations, including smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation, and lack of exercise.

In 2021, 1,122,249 deaths were registered in the country, of which 8% (90,123) were due to malignant tumors. The rate of deaths due to malignant tumors increased from 6.09 deaths per 10 thousand people in 2010 to 7.06 in 2021.  In 2021, Mexico City, Colima, Veracruz, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Morelos were the entities with the highest death rate from malignant tumors in the country.

The most common cancers (in descending order according to the estimated number of new cases in 2020) are breast cancer, lung and bronchus cancer, prostate cancer, colon and rectum cancer, melanoma (a skin cancer), bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, kidney and renal pelvis cancer, endometrial cancer, leukemia, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, and liver cancer.

What do you do if you have a diagnosis?

The first recommendation is to go to a medical specialist; if you have a diagnosis of cancer known as solid tumors such as breast cancer, colon, stomach, pancreas, liver, or testicular, you should visit an oncologist.

If you have a diagnosis of hematological cancer, such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, you should visit a hematologist.

Each cancer is different, so the treatment and prognosis are also other.

Recommendations:

* Maintain an active lifestyle. Multiple studies have shown us the benefit of exercise in cancer prevention. Still, there is also evidence that it benefits the patient who already has the diagnosis, increasing the chances of responding adequately to treatment and decreasing the side effects of chemotherapy.

* Maintain a balanced diet. Obesity and diabetes are risk factors for almost any known cancer, so it is advisable to maintain an adequate diet.

* Sleep at least 8 hours; sleep has been shown to increase the activity of our immune system, mainly cells known as natural killers primarily responsible for fighting cancer.

* Caution with alternative medicine: there are many remedies on the market promising almost magical solutions, and the truth is that most of them lack scientific evidence. Those include some “Natural Remedies” that we do not know what side effects they may have on the body and, at the same time, what interactions they may have with chemotherapy; always consult your doctor.

* Stop smoking and discontinue the intake of other drugs.

Automedicarse, un riesgo para la salud

Publicado

Self-medication, a health risk

It is an irresponsible way of creating dependence and even endangering our lives

Self-medication means going to a pharmacy to buy a drug without a prescription from the treating physician. This practice is quite common among people, but it is also hazardous.

Any medication, even those that require a prescription, can generate adverse reactions, from mild manifestations such as urticaria -the appearance of hives on the skin- to anaphylactic shock, a medical emergency caused by a severe allergic reaction- and can be life-threatening.

The physician should calculate the medication dosage at the consultation since a low dosage may not give results, and a high one may have undesirable consequences.

Self-medication is a widespread phenomenon worldwide and has become a significant global health problem. Recent studies indicate that it involves between 50 and 75 percent of the population.

Finally, we can conclude that, whatever the reason for self-medication, this practice is risky and irresponsible since it is a habit that has become dangerously ingrained in our society; using medications irresponsibly leads to a lack of effectiveness since they are used in situations that are not necessary, which creates dependence or addiction to drugs.
