No te enredes en las redes

Publicado

Don’t get tangled up in the networks

Social networks have become part of our daily interaction, even more in this last year when we had fewer opportunities to meet in person.

On these platforms we can celebrate the joys of life, share the good things that happen to us, show support for others when they go through difficult times and join causes that bring people together. However, these same networks can also be used to show something we really are not, to speak bad of others, spread misinformation and fake news, incite anger, enmity and create division.

It’s important to learn to navigate the world of social media with wisdom, caution and showing love for our neighbor.

As Christians the way we behave on social media should be congruent with what we say we believe and just as important as the behavior we have with others face to face. If we don’t dare to express our opinion or show in person the same as we do through a screen, it’s a warning sign. The commandments God has given us apply in all formats.

So, when posting content, following someone or giving an opinion on a topic on social networks, let’s remember these 5 points:

1. Whoever is behind the screen reading is also another person, is our neighbor, so “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

2. God knows us as we are, our identity and value are in him, not in the likes or followers we may have.

3. God calls us to be humble in a narcissistic world and peacemakers in a polarized world.

“Do nothing out of selfishness or vanity; rather, in humility regard others as better than yourselves…. Do all things without complaint or strife, so that you may be blameless and pure, blameless children of God in the midst of a crooked and depraved generation. In it you shine like stars in the firmament” (Philippians 2:3, 14-15).

4. Let us think about how to serve others through what we publish. Let us ask ourselves if what we are about to post is true, is it helpful or inspirational to others, is it necessary, is it kind, or does it bring glory to God.

“In conclusion, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

5. Social media only reveals what is in our heart. We are what we post, follow, and comment on. Let our profiles and walls show the fruit of the spirit and not of the flesh.

“The works of the sinful nature are well known: sexual immorality, impurity, and licentiousness; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, rivalries, dissensions, sectarianism, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and similar things. I warn you now, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Instead, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. There is no law condemning these things” (Galatians 5:19-23).

La problemática del Siglo 21

Publicado

The problems of the 21st Century

Every April 16, the International Day Against Child Slavery is commemorated to expose and punish those who commit this crime

Human trafficking is also known as “The Slavery of the 21st Century” about the convention on slavery signed in Geneva in 1926, whose objective was to sanction this problem, as well as trafficking.

Therefore, on April 16 of each year, the International Day against Child Slavery is commemorated, paying tribute to the Pakistani boy Iqbal Masih, 12 years old, who managed to free himself from slavery by fleeing from his enslavers to whom he was sold by his father and worked for the liberation of other subjugated children until he was murdered on April 16, 1995.

This cruel story not only happens in distant countries but also in Mexico, where tragic stories are enclosed behind the walls of many homes; child slavery (trafficking and exploitation) is so subtle that it goes unnoticed.

The most complicated thing is to be able to identify it and see beyond it because it is confused with licit or average behaviors.

Open-air prisons refer to all those places where, although we do not see a shackle or a pair of chains, children and adolescents are in slavery under the control of an adult who exploits them at a young age, who benefits from them, from minors who cannot resist, who have no other alternative and therefore are subjected to abuse, such as begging under threat, doing jobs that put them at risk or for which they are not old enough, with work schedules that span an entire day, and the most painful, prostitution.

There are many causes, but the root causes come from poverty, inequality, and discrimination.

This is undoubtedly a violation of human rights and, in this case, of children’s rights. Children and adolescents are the leading groups vulnerable to slavery, so the only way to help them is to inform ourselves about this crime and report it to make the community see that we can be part or accomplices of the gangs.

When we remain silent about cases of exploitation, we are indifferent to the suffering of others; we consume the product of forced labor and cater to the supply.

Recognizing and defending that dignity is not for sale, especially for our children, is essential.

El desafío de la bondad

Publicado

The challenge of kindness

It is not just about ‘doing good,’ but by example, helping others

In a world where negative news often makes headlines and society seems increasingly polarized, it is tempting to think that good-hearted people are in danger of extinction; however, considering Psalms 37:3, it would be a severe mistake to underestimate the ability given to us to protect and foster good amid the challenges of our time.

Kindness is a quality that has been prevalent throughout history and that often emerges in times of crisis; we see people striving to do good and organizations working to alleviate suffering. Kindness has not disappeared, but a more conscious effort is necessary to “keep it alive” in a society where it sometimes seems absent.

Cultivating goodness in ourselves and society is a complex but not impossible challenge. In every act, big or small, we have the opportunity to reflect our divine nature aligned with the character of our Father as we are taught in Psalms 145:9, “The Lord is good to all, and he tenderly cares for his works.”

One way to exercise goodness is to reflect on what God has done for us, get to know Him, and strive to imitate His benevolence by loving and serving those who need it. As Jesus pointed out in Luke 6:38, “Practice giving, and it will be given to you. They will pour into their laps an excellent measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over.”

So let us not forget that God wants us to persevere in “doing good” and help others not get tired through our example.

Justicia social

Publicado

Social justice

A philosophical and political point of view that promotes the equitable distribution of opportunities and resources

Throughout its history, the meaning of social justice has varied but always around the same axis of equality. However, in 2007, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20 as World Day of Social Justice, maintaining that this is “a fundamental principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence.”

What is it?

Social justice is a complex concept that covers issues such as equality, opportunities, the welfare state, poverty, labor demands, feminism, and many others that have as their common goal the construction of a more equitable and less unequal society.

So, it is a concept based on the inequality between individuals and aims to end it so that people are on the same level.

It can be understood differently, but it always revolves around the idea that societies must change for the better, that is, towards more fair societies in distributing their wealth. It aims to reduce the margins of exclusion and discrimination and to combat poverty and inequality among citizens.

Social justice is a philosophical and political point of view that promotes the equitable distribution of opportunities and resources in society.

It is one of the most critical aspects of societies and peoples; it is a value that promotes respect equally among all the duties and rights that all individuals that make up a society have.

It focuses on the equitable distribution of all social goods to ensure dignity to the inhabitants, thus improving cohesion.

It is a principle related to social and individual life in the political community.

What we should know

• It is one of the many values that exist; however, it turns out to be the most important for society.

• It is responsible for ensuring the common well-being and that people can live harmoniously in society.

• Ensures a good balance between the individual and common good based on fundamental human values.

• Seeks to find equity in social issues.

• It is the flag of many political and social organizations and movements.

• It manifests protests in the streets and public spaces when the State does not guarantee or prove it within society.

In short, justice, equality, and freedom should be more than just words; they should be goals. Being a good man is not the same as being a good citizen; as I always say, there is no peace without justice.
