A harmonious home, still in the middle of the chaos

The last few months have definitely not been what we expected. The daily routine during 2020 has changed drastically for many of us because now we work from home, the children stopped attending school and many places closed their doors.

Faced with this situation, some have known how to make the most of their “quarantine” time, but for others it has been difficult due to different factors that, to a greater or lesser extent, have increased stress levels, afecting even family coexistence.

It is very likely that the rest of this year things will not be as they were before, and in this “new normal” we must continue adjusting to changes, so I want to share some practical tips to achieve harmony in your home, whatever the circumstance in the one you find.

1. Change your perspective: In your house you are irreplaceable, that does not limit you to fulfill other roles, but in your role as wife and mother in your home you are the only person that God chose for that task. (Proverbs 14: 1)

2. Learn to really know your family: The more time we spend with someone else, we get to know what that person is like. Although we normally focus on negative habits, attitudes and behaviors, make an effort to see all positive things in your husband and children and learn to praise them for the positive things, you will see how they will seek to show more those behaviors.

3. Create your own formula: For each family, achieving harmony can mean something different, so there are four essential points that you should consider according to your family:

• Identify what stresses or irritates you. It can be the mess in the house, the constant fights between the children, the additional workload, interruptions, excess of information, the economy.

• Evaluate and adjust your expectations. For example, if your expectation is that the house is kept clean, but you have young children, it’s difficult to get when they don’t have the ability to do large tasks yet. In this case, you need to adjust your expectation and understand that the stage you are in will pass faster than you imagine and the priority should be to focus on caring for the little ones. Now that if your children are older, you can involve them in household chores and it will be easier for the house to be kept clean and tidy. Keep that in mind, things don’t happen overnight or magically.

• Organize and establish routines. This helps us optimize time, since establishing new and better habits requires patience. Let your family see that they are a team, appeal to their hearts and remind them that what we do is for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).

• Limit screens. This is one of the most difficult points, but it’s necessary for everyone. The excessive use of any electronic device has effects on our mood, much of the stress we have experienced as adults has been due to constant exposure to news about the pandemic on social networks. It’s certainly tempting to let kids spend entertaining time on a screen, but the smaller they are, the greater the negative effect on them. Letting them get “bored” will spark their creativity. Stay firm, don’t give in, and you will see.

4. Don’t sacrifice your time with God and trust him: This is the last but the most important advice.

The previous points are practical actions that on a daily basis can help us to cope with this crisis, but it is essential to spend time with God every day, remember that apart from him we can do nothing. Ask him for wisdom to guide your family through these difficult times, He can bring to your family the harmony they need even in the midst of a world in chaos (Galatians 5: 22-23).

Trust that he will supply everything we need and rests on him. You can be sure that he has given you the elements to carry out the work that he has entrusted to you and will give you the strength to do it (Isaiah 40: 29-31).

My family is unique

…and each one is the protagonist of a story worthy of applause

I heard someone say a long time ago: “Don’t compare yourself to anyone because maybe you will end up feeling more or less than that person.” I think the same applies to the family in that each is unique and unrepeatable.

Let’s think for a moment about the individualities with which a man and a woman come to form a family: culture, education, value system, and upbringing, among others; everything merges, and how Genesis 2:24 says: “Therefore the man leaves his father and mother, and unites himself with his wife, and the two merge into a single being,” to give birth to a new family, unique, that is, one that does not have and should not allow comparison.

My family is unique because that is what its members are like, and each is the protagonist of a great story worthy of applause.

The laughter, the anecdotes, the triumphs, the failures, the conversations, the silences, and the secrets that are integrated within the walls of the family are precisely what makes each family unique.

Unique does not mean ideal; not everything is always perfect, but even how conflicts are resolved is part of that uniqueness that gives color to your family.

Genesis 37 2 illustrates the picture of a unique family: “This is the story of the family of Jacob.” The story we find here shows us the victories and failures of a family chosen by God, which, despite its imperfections, manages to contemplate the provision and mercy of the Lord.

At the end of the story, Joseph could forgive his brother’s betrayal, understanding that it was all part of God’s purpose to preserve his family and fulfill his will.

So, what is your family history? Are there dark chapters? Do they have complex characters? Don’t worry; remember that God chooses you along with them, and your entire family history is a painting where he is the painter, and no detail is not under his control.

3. Santificarás las fiestas
4. Honrarás a tu padre y a tu madre
5. No matarás
6. No cometerás actos impuros
7. No robarás
8. No dirás falsos testimonios ni mentirás
9. No consentirás pensamientos o deseos impuros

Romanos 12:16-18

Rules of coexistence

They seek to promote good treatment and harmonious living within society.

The rules of coexistence are guidelines for social behavior established by a group of people or a community. These rules are based on the respect that should exist between individuals; they seek to promote good treatment and a harmonious life within society.

Thus, the rules of coexistence are supported by respect for others and their rights, honesty, equality, tolerance, solidarity, responsibility, companionship, a sense of duty, and teamwork.

Understanding the values shared in a space or institution and acting following them favors living in a constructive and organized space where a code of conduct and principles that allow the smooth flow of daily life are shared. Likewise, these agreed-upon rules help to prevent some conflicts and, when they arise, allow for a better solution.

It is essential to mention that the rules of coexistence vary according to cultural contexts, the type of relationships established among the group members, and the physical space in which they are manifested.

However, it should be clear that although the rules of coexistence vary according to the context, there should always be coherence between them and the actions carried out in a given situation since they are based on the same principles and values. For example, there are different rules of coexistence, always keeping coherence, in a family space than in a pedagogical, work, virtual, public, or professional one.

As we know, man is a social being by nature, and to balance his physical integrity and mental health, he requires different socialization spaces that allow him to develop in different areas. Therefore, “The importance of coexistence lies in the individual recognition as a social being to know and accept other people with their differences or characteristics.”

We can see that in the Bible, we have ten rules of coexistence, and these are the commandments:

1. Thou shalt love God above all things. 2.
2. Thou shalt not pronounce the name of God in vain.
3. Thou shalt sanctify the feasts
4. Honor your father and mother.
5. Thou shalt not kill
6. Thou shalt not commit impure acts
7. Thou shalt not steal
8. Thou shalt not bear false witness or lie.
9. Thou shalt not indulge in impure thoughts or desires
10. Thou shalt not covet the goods of others

“Be of one mind among yourselves; not haughty, but associate not with the lowly. Be not wise in your conceit. Repay no one evil for evil; seek what is good in the sight of all men.”
