Erika y Édgar Curioca hacen realidad el sueño de ser padres una vez más gracias al programa Familias Lightshine
Tras 24 años de casados, dos hijos de 23 y 20 años, y una vida tranquila, el matrimonio de Erika Valenzuela y Édgar Curioca decidió volver al ajetreado tiempo de ser padres, pero esta vez de manera temporal y bajo las condiciones de Familias LightShine.
Familias LightShine es un programa que tiene como finalidad restituir el derecho a vivir en familia de niñas, niños y adolescentes en condición de vulnerabilidad, mismos que son separados de sus cuidadores primarios quienes enfrentan alguna situación legal, en este lapso los menores deben ser llevarlos a albergues, refugios o centros de acogimiento.
Sin embargo, LightShine se encarga de capacitar a padres temporales para recibir a alguno de estos menores en su casa, donde se encargarán de proveerles alimento, techo y educación, mientras son restituidos a sus hogares reales.
Precisamente tras conocer los beneficios de Familias LightShine, es que los Curioca Valenzuela decidieron acercarse a la organización y aplicar para ser parte del programa, pues desde mucho tiempo antes tenían el deseo de volver a ser padres.
Su idea principal era la adopción, por lo que primero se acercaron al DIF, institución de la que nunca recibieron respuesta, sin embargo, al ser un tema abierto dentro de la familia, la hermana de Erika les compartió una nota que había leído en un medio de comunicación local, donde hablaban de esta nueva modalidad, que no sólo les permitiría ser padres de un niño sino de varios de ellos.
Tras lo anterior, Erika y Édgar no dudaron en hablar a los teléfonos que aparecían en la nota. “En cuando nos platicaron del programa nos enamoramos de él”, comparte la mamá.
Así que luego de aprobar las entrevistas y acudir a las capacitaciones, el primero en llegar a la casa de la familia Curioca Valenzuela fue un niño migrante de 8 años, hondureño, cuyo sueño era poder reencontrarse con su madre y su hermanito, quienes lo esperaban en Florida.
El pequeño, quien había vivido una dura travesía, permaneció con ellos durante tres meses, tiempo suficiente para que los contagiara de su energía y les enseñara acerca de una cultura totalmente desconocida para el matrimonio, así como de sus dos hijos.
“Nos vino a cambia la dinámica familiar”, comenta Édgar, quien agrega que el pequeño siempre estaba dispuesto a ayudar y hasta les enseñó a preparar algunos platillos típicos de su país natal.
“Con él fue un sube y baja de emociones, vivimos muchas experiencias muy gratas, muchas experiencias de amor, fue mucha su entrega y nosotros también con él”, menciona Erika.
La despedida
Y aunque sólo fueron tres meses, el pequeño viajero logró ganarse el corazón de los juarenses, por lo que la despedida fue muy difícil y emotiva.
La hora de decir adiós al niño de entonces ya 9 años, ocurrió luego de que recibieran la llamada de la trabajadora social de la organización, quien pidió reunirse con ellos de inmediato, en ese encuentro les notificaron que el menor por fin podría alcanzar a su mamá en Estados Unidos, donde le esperaría una vida diferente.
Tras la noticia, regresaron a casa para preparar la maleta además de un álbum con las fotografías que a lo largo de su estancia con los Curioca se había tomado, esa última noche recordaron los buenos momentos y cenaron la comida favorita del pequeño, quien al día siguiente debía dejarlos.
“Había mucha conexión con él como que luego luego nos vinculamos, era un niño con muchas características de nuestra familia”, recuerda la madre.
La conexión fue tan grande que al día hoy mantienen contacto con él, pues este último se encargó de localizarlos gracias a las redes sociales. “nos llena de emoción mantener el contacto con él”, dice Erika.
Segunda oportunidad
“Cuando creíamos que nuestro trabajo había terminado”, dice entre risas ella, recibieron una llamada en la que les requerían su ayuda de nuevo.
Un niño totalmente diferente, tranquilo y ensimismado de apenas 10 años de edad llegó a su casa, en la cual ha estado durante ya un año.
El menor, retirado de su entorno por problemas familiares, tuvo un comienzo más difícil, por lo que la pareja cambió la estrategia que habían implementado en su experiencia anterior, lo primero que hicieron fue subir el nivel de alerta, pues ahora además tenían que lidiar con la situación de salud del menor, así como que proviene de una familia local.
Sin embargo, han sabido acoplarse increíblemente, tanto que el menor y su “papá” Édgar salen de casa juntos todos los días para cumplir con sus actividades escolares y de trabajo, respectivamente, lo cual ha creado un lazo importante entre los dos.
También han viajado como familia, siendo en una de estas salidas que el niño pudo conocer más sobre uno de sus grandes intereses, los dinosaurios, pues juntos visitaron el Museo de Paleontología de la ciudad de Delicias, Chihuahua.
Y así como esa experiencia, los Curioca Valenzuela recuerdan muchas otras, tanto con el primer hijo temporal como con el que hoy habita en su hogar, “el programa es una bendición… Ha valido la pena”, dice satisfecho y lleno de emoción Édgar, quien vive esta situación como una nueva oportunidad para hacer las cosas distintas a cuando se enfrentó a la paternidad por primera vez, ahora consciente que al haber tenido a sus hijos muy joven hubo algunas cosas que pudo haber hecho diferente.

Erika and Edgar Curioca realize the dream of being parents once again thanks to the Families Lightshine program
After 24 years of marriage, two children ages 23 and 20, and a quiet life, the union of Erika Valenzuela and Edgar Curioca decided to return to the hectic time of being parents, but this time temporarily and under the conditions of LightShine Families.
Familias LightShine is a program that aims to restore the right to live in a family for children and adolescents in vulnerable conditions who are separated from their primary caregivers who are facing some legal situation. The children must be taken to shelters, refuges or foster care centers during this time.
However, LightShine is in charge of training temporary parents to receive some of these minors in their homes, where they will provide them with food, shelter and education while returning to their natural homes.
After learning about the benefits of LightShine Families, the Curioca Valenzuelas approached the organization and applied to be part of the program since they had wanted to become parents again for a long time.
Their main idea was adoption, so they first approached the DIF, an institution from which they never received a response; however, being an open topic within the family, Erika’s sister shared with them a note she had read in a local media, where they talked about this new modality, which would not only allow them to be parents of one child but of several of them.
After this, Erika and Edgar did not hesitate to call the telephone numbers in the article. “When they told us about the program, we fell in love with it,” shares the mother.
So after passing the interviews and attending the training, the first to arrive at the Curioca Valenzuela family’s home was an 8-year-old Honduran migrant boy whose dream was to be reunited with his mother and brother, who were waiting for him in Florida.
The little boy, who had lived a challenging journey, stayed with them for three months, enough time for him to infect them with his energy and teach them about a culture unknown to the couple and their two children.
“He came to change the family dynamic,” says Edgar, who adds that the little boy was always willing to help and even taught them how to prepare some typical dishes from his native country.
“With him, it was an up and down of emotions; we lived many delightful experiences, many experiences of love; he was very dedicated, and so were we with him,” says Erika.
The farewell
And although it was only three months, the little traveler managed to win the hearts of the people of Juarez, so the farewell was tough and emotional.
The time to say goodbye to the boy, then nine years old, came after they received a call from the social worker of the organization, who asked to meet with them immediately; in that meeting, they were notified that the child could finally reach his mother in the United States, where a different life would be waiting for him.
After the news, they returned home to prepare the suitcase and an album with the photographs he had taken during his stay with them. That last night they remembered the good times and had dinner with the little boy’s favorite food, who had to leave them the next day.
“There was a lot of connection with him as we later bonded; he was a child with many characteristics of our family,” recalls the mother.
The connection was so great that they maintain contact with him to this day, as the latter was in charge of locating them thanks to social networks. “It fills us with emotion to keep in touch with him,” says Erika.
Second chance
“When we thought our work was over,” she says with a laugh, they received a call asking for their help again.
A different, quiet and self-absorbed 10-year-old boy arrived at their home, where he has been for a year now.
The child, withdrawn from his environment due to family problems, had a more difficult start, so the couple changed the strategy they had implemented in their previous experience; the first thing they did was to raise the alert level because now they also had to deal with the child’s health situation, as well as the fact that he comes from a local family.
However, they have been able to get along incredibly well, so much so that the child and his “dad,” Edgar, leave the house together daily to fulfill their school and work activities, respectively, creating an essential bond between the two.
They have also traveled as a family; in one of these outings, the child learned more about one of his significant interests, dinosaurs, as together they visited the Museum of Paleontology in Delicias, Chihuahua.
And just like that experience, the Curioca Valenzuelas remember many others, both with their first temporary child and with the one that now lives in their home, “the program is a blessing… It has been worth it”, says Edgar, who is satisfied and full of emotion, and who lives this situation as a new opportunity to do things differently than when he faced fatherhood for the first time, now aware that having had his children very young there were some things he could have done differently.

Alexia González es un ejemplo destacado de esta transformación. Con una licenciatura en administración de empresas, Alexia es actualmente la gerente de Operaciones de Servicio Internacional de Logística y Transporte, una empresa que opera tanto en México como en Estados Unidos. Su historia es un testimonio de determinación, superación y pasión por una industria que, a pesar de los desafíos, la ha cautivado profundamente.
Alexia comenzó su carrera en el departamento de mantenimiento de la empresa familiar, escalando posiciones hasta asumir, hace dos años, la gerencia de operaciones. Alexia began her career in the maintenance department of the family business, climbing the ranks until taking on operations management two years ago. Ella logra equilibrar todos sus roles para sumar fuerzas en beneficio de su equipo de trabajo
Carmen Sotelo, es gerente de Recursos Humanos y Cumplimiento Legal de la empresa transportista Servicio Internacional de Enlace Terrestre (Siete), una compañía con más de 31 años de experiencia.
Además, es una mujer visionaria con tres carreras: Comercio Exterior, Psicología y Contaduría. Hermana mayor de dos hombres, con quienes se crío, esposa y madre de tres hijos varones, por lo que, no le es complicado trabajar con hombres.
A la par
Carmen considera que a lo largo de su carrera no ha tenido competencia con el hombre, pues en el área donde empezó a desempeñarse dentro del mundo transportista fue en aduanas. Para ella trabajar con varones, no es un reto, ya que ha aprendido a lidiar con ellos, habla su lenguaje y sabe cómo sacar provecho de sus habilidades y capacidades.
“El hombre es líder por naturaleza, entonces para mí no ha sido nada difícil, me gusta desarrollarlos, ponerles retos, porque yo sé cómo ellos trabajan, sé que les gustan los retos, la competencia entre ellos, sé que son líderes de hogar, ellos necesitan ganar más porque son proveedores de sus esposas e hijos, entonces eso a mí como jefa de ellos me ayuda porque les puedo poner retos y otras metas, y ellos las alcanzan”, mencionó la líder empresarial.
Nos platica que su inspiración para entrar al sector transportista fue su esposo, pues cuando se conocieron él ya se desempeñaba dentro del sector y aunque ella tenía una noción del trabajo, al ver en él su dedicación y valentía, la inspiró a entrar y seguir una carrera en esta área.
La profesionista señaló que, le gusta aprender cosas nuevas y cuando su marido la invitó a participar en su empresa, fue todo un reto para ella. “Ha sido difícil, pero como me gusta mucho aprender, entonces ha sido al mismo tiempo interesante y muy placentero, porque a pesar de que ha sido difícil, al estar aprendiendo cosas nuevas de áreas que no conozco, me ha hecho motivarme, se me ha hecho divertido y grato el camino”, dijo Sotelo.
En evolución
En cuanto a la evolución del sector transportista, antes las autoridades no exigían tantos requisitos. Actualmente, el equipo K9 es uno de esos requisitos, pues se trabaja en evitar el tráfico de estupefacientes, por lo que, los transportistas debieron adaptarse y convertirse en expertos en ese aspecto.
Carmen recuerda que cada vez han ido asumiendo más responsabilidades, como el manifiesto internacional de carga, un documento de control aduanero al que el transportista debe dar seguimiento. También les solicitan carta porte y otros requerimientos, por lo que se han tenido que adaptar a todos los cambios.
Sotelo indicó que, el reconocimiento de cada uno como persona, así como respetar las diferencias y temperamentos, le ha permitido tener un ambiente inclusivo y empático en la empresa.
Ella junto al resto de su equipo tratan de comer juntos cada viernes e incluir a los departamentos que conforman la compañía, lo cual aprovechan para platicar y convivir, además de que les ayuda a trabajar y ser unidos.
Refirió que, cuando surge un problema, se toma el tiempo de hablar con cada uno de sus colaboradores sin tomar partido, pues dice, “ella es objetiva y se pone del lado de la razón”.
Además, les brinda capacitaciones de su puesto y de los demás, para que todos sean conscientes de las labores que debe hacer cada uno.
Equilibrar todas las facetas
Relató que, a veces se tenía que levantar desde las 5:00 de la mañana, para hacer el lonche de los niños, preparar la comida, las tareas, alistar uniformes desde la noche y, además, tener el tiempo suficiente para lograr todo lo que se proponía.
Señaló que, la clave de todo era planear y hacer una lista de pendientes, a los que ponía fecha y hora, según la prioridad y urgencia. Cabe destacar que, a pesar de todos sus roles, hace un espacio en su apretada agenda para orar y trabajar en su ministerio de matrimonios, el cual está enfocado en apoyar y orientar a otras parejas para que resuelvan sus conflictos.
Su fe en Dios
Considera que, su fe en Dios la ha fortalecido, ya que si no lo hubiera conocido no hubiera llegado a donde está, e incluso cuando ve a una persona que tiene problemas, si se lo permite, ora por ella.
Su ministerio lleva por nombre “Siete”, igual que su compañía, pues fue en la misma empresa donde comenzaron con seminarios de matrimonios con 15 parejas y una duración de siete semanas.
Indicó que ante la gran necesidad de orientación que había en la comunidad, el ministerio fue creciendo exponencialmente, sin embargo, tras la pandemia por Covid-19, tuvieron que hacer una pausa, y actualmente, están por retomar sus actividades en el mes de diciembre.
Una mujer visionaria
Para Carmen Sotelo ser visionaria, la ha llevado a abrirse nuevas puertas, que le han permitido desarrollarse en varias carreras, lo que considera es importante para cualquier mujer.
“Pienso que todas debemos tener una visión corta, una mediana y una a largo plazo, porque para mí ha sido importantísimo siempre tener una visión hacia dónde voy, y a veces si he tenido que regresarme a hacer el plan”, señaló.
El tener una visión de que la mujer puede lograr muchas cosas, a pesar de todos los obstáculos que nos pone la sociedad, y que, si puede lograr lo que se proponga, a través de ser una mujer visionaria.

Carmen Sotelo is the Human Resources and Legal Compliance Manager of the transportation company Servicio Internacional de Enlace Terrestre (Siete), a company with more than 31 years of experience.
She is also a visionary woman with three careers: Foreign Trade, Psychology and Accounting. She is the eldest sister of two men, with whom she grew up, and a wife and mother of three sons, which makes it easy for her to work with men.

Carmen believes that throughout her career she has not had competition with men, since the area where she began to work within the transport world was in customs. For her, working with men is not a challenge, since she has learned to deal with them, speaks their language and knows how to take advantage of their skills and abilities.
“Men are leaders by nature, so it hasn’t been difficult for me. I like to develop them, to challenge them, because I know how they work, I know that they like challenges, competition among themselves, I know that they are leaders of their homes, they need to earn more because they are providers for their wives and children, so that helps me as their boss because I can set them challenges and other goals, and they achieve them,” said the business leader.
She tells us that her inspiration to enter the transport sector was her husband, because when they met, he was already working in the sector and although she had an idea of the work, seeing his dedication and courage inspired her to enter and pursue a career in this area.
The professional said that she likes to learn new things and when her husband invited her to participate in his company, it was quite a challenge for her. “It has been difficult, but since I really like to learn, it has been interesting and very pleasant at the same time, because even though it has been difficult, learning new things from areas that I don’t know has motivated me, and the journey has been fun and enjoyable,” said Sotelo.
In evolution
Regarding the evolution of the transport sector, the authorities did not demand so many requirements before. Currently, the K9 team is one of those requirements, since work is being done to prevent drug trafficking, so transporters had to adapt and become experts in that aspect.
Carmen recalls that they have been taking on more and more responsibilities, such as the international cargo manifest, a customs control document that the carrier must follow up on. They are also asked for a bill of lading and other requirements, so they have had to adapt to all the changes.
Sotelo indicated that the recognition of each person, as well as respecting differences and temperaments, has allowed her to have an inclusive and empathetic environment in the company.
She and the rest of her team try to eat together every Friday and include the departments that make up the company, which they take advantage of to talk and socialize, in addition to helping them work and be united.
She said that when a problem arises, she takes the time to talk to each of her collaborators without taking sides, because she says, “she is objective and takes the side of reason.”
In addition, they provide training for their position and for others, so that everyone is aware of the tasks that each one must do.
Balancing all facets
She said that sometimes she had to get up at 5:00 in the morning to make the children’s lunch, prepare food, do housework, get uniforms ready at night and, in addition, have enough time to achieve everything she set out to do.
She pointed out that the key to everything was planning and making a to-do list, which she set a date and time for, depending on priority and urgency. It is worth noting that, despite all her roles, she makes time in her busy schedule to pray and work on her marriage ministry, which is focused on supporting and guiding other couples to resolve their conflicts.
Her faith in God
She believes that her faith in God has strengthened her, since if she had not known him, she would not have gotten to where she is, and even when she sees a person who has problems, if they allow it, she prays for them.
Their ministry is called “Seven,” just like their company, since it was in the same company where they began with marriage seminars with 15 couples and a duration of seven weeks.
They indicated that given the great need for guidance in the community, the ministry was growing exponentially, however, after the Covid-19 pandemic, they had to take a break, and currently, they are about to resume their activities in the month of December.
A visionary woman
For Carmen Sotelo, being a visionary has led her to open new doors, which have allowed her to develop in various careers, which she considers important for any woman.
“I think that we all need to have a short-term, a medium-term and a long-term vision, because for me it has always been very important to have a vision of where I am going, and sometimes I have had to go back and make the plan,” she said.
Having a vision that women can achieve many things, despite all the obstacles that society puts in our way, and that, if they can achieve what they set out to do, by being a visionary woman.
