El amor por el tenis que Daniela profesa nació a sus 8 años, cuando asistía a un campamento de verano en Delicias, Chihuahua
“Soy de una ciudad que casi no es reconocida por el deporte”, dice a Visionarias la tenista juarense Daniela Herrera, quien desea que más niños la vean como un ejemplo que los haga involucrase en el deporte de figuras como Roger Federer o María Sharapova.
Todo comenzó de niña
Estar entre las mejores seis de su conferencia y ser la raqueta número uno de su escuela −Bethel College de Kansas, Estados Unidos− ha sido un camino de mucha dedicación y compromiso, el cual comenzó a transitar cuando tenía 8 años, en la ciudad de Delicias, Chihuahua.
Daniela cuenta que en verano acudía a un campamento en el que tomaba clases de tenis, actividad para la cual el entrenador le veía aptitudes, por lo que sugirió a su mamá que la inscribiera de manera formal.
Afortunadamente el club quedaba cerca de su casa y no era inconveniente para que la pequeña acudiera; desde ahí se enamoró del deporte y comenzó la complicidad con Paco Paredes, quien hasta hoy es su entrenador principal.
Recuerda que en sus primeros juegos tenía un brazo quebrado, por lo que no pudo mostrar su talento de inmediato, pero eran tantas las ganas de pisar la cancha que permanecía detrás de Paco preguntando cuando podía entrar, hasta que por fin su oportunidad llegó.
La competencia
De la mano del entrenador Paredes, la joven, hoy de 20 años, comenzó a jugar en torneos de El Paso, así como de varias partes de la República Mexicana, ganando algunas competencias, incluso participando en olimpiadas nacionales.
Daniela, forma parte de la Federación Mexicana de Tenis y actualmente es parte del equipo de la universidad Bethel, donde estudia una ciencia en matemáticas, y a la que le ha dado trofeos regionales, logrando su pase a juegos en los que sólo asisten las mejores 16 representantes del tenis en el país.
Sobre el deporte que la apasiona, la jugadora comparte que es una actividad muy independiente, “en la cancha nada más eres tú y eso es lo que me gusta”, afirma.
El Club
Debido querer estar más enfocada en la universidad y en cuestiones de salud, Daniela Herrera se ha tomado un año fuera de juego, sin embargo, no ha dejado de practicar ni un solo día, siguiendo bajo el cobijo de Paco, su entrenador y guía.
Actualmente toma su raqueta y lanza pelotas por lo menos dos horas diarias, y aprovecha para jugar con los miembros del Club San Miguel, el lugar donde da clases, sobre todo a niños que ven en ella una figura referencial del “deporte blanco”.
“Es muy padre, cuando entrenas con alguien más, cuando vienes a clases en grupo, es un ambiente muy saludable… es un deporte muy bonito y muy divertido”, dice la entrevistada.
Sus planes
Por lo pronto, Daniela no se desespera y continúa con sus sueños de terminar la universidad y pronto jugar un torneo profesional ¿y por qué no? alguno donde pueda conocer a dos de sus ídolos, Federer y Sharapova.

Bethel’s No.1 Racket
Daniela’s love for tennis was born at the age of 8, when she attended a summer camp in Delicias, Chihuahua
“I’m from a city that is almost not recognized for the sport,” says Juarense tennis player Daniela Herrera to Visionarias, who wants more children to see her as an example that makes them get involved in the sport of figures like Roger Federer or Maria Sharapova.
It all started as a child
Being among the top six in her conference and being the number one racket in her school -Bethel College of Kansas, United States- has been a path of outstanding dedication and commitment, which began when she was eight years old in the city of Delicias, Chihuahua.
Daniela says that she attended a camp in the summer where she took tennis lessons, an activity for which the coach saw her aptitude, so he suggested to her mother to enroll her formally.
Fortunately, the club was close to her home, and it was not inconvenient for the little girl to attend; from there, she fell in love with the sport and began to get involved with Paco Paredes, who is her leading coach.
She remembers that she had a broken arm in her first games, so she could not show her talent right away, but she was so eager to step onto the court that she stayed behind Paco, asking when she could enter until finally, her chance came.
The competition
Under the guidance of coach Paredes, the young girl, now 20 years old, began to play in tournaments in El Paso and various parts of Mexico, win some competitions, and even participate in the national Olympics.
Daniela is part of the Mexican Tennis Federation. She is currently part of the Bethel University team, where she studies science in mathematics. She has given regional trophies, achieving her pass to games in which only the best 16 representatives of tennis in the country attend.
The player shares that it is a very independent activity about the sport she is passionate about, “on the court, you are just you, and that’s what I like,” she says.
The Club
Due to wanting to be more focused on college and health issues, Daniela Herrera has taken a year off from the game; however, she has not stopped practicing a single day, continuing under the shelter of Paco, her coach and guide.
Currently, she takes her racquet and throws balls for at least two hours a day and takes the opportunity to play with the members of the San Miguel Club, the place where she gives classes, especially to children who see in her a referential figure of the “white sport.”
“It’s very cool when you train with someone else when you come to classes in a group; it’s a very healthy environment… it’s a very nice and fun sport,” says the interviewee.
Her plans
For now, Daniela does not despair and continues with her dreams of finishing college and soon playing a professional tournament and why not? One where she can meet two of her idols, Federer and Sharapova.
