The best possible education

One of the main wishes, but also concerns, of parents is to give the best possible education to their children. Without a doubt, the education is one of the most important things in any family, but let me make it clear: It’s not the most important thing!

Why do I emphasize this? Because many families are sacrificing everything else for their children education. I want to put it in the right perspective, the preparation that our children receive is essential, but not if it’s leading to emotional, spiritual and financial ruin.

We can offer them a good education and preparation regardless of our financial situation if we get the right perspective. The first thing we need to do is break some misconceptions about education: grades and school degrees do not guarantee jobs, wealth, or “success”. Several studies carried out on successful people conclude that their success was attributed by 15% to their training and education, and the remaining 85% to their attitude and character.

Now, if we understand that education and skills development is only “a part” of the formula for us to do better, and that it’s not the answer to all our children’s problems, we don’t have to go crazy for schools that are outside of our budgets, which will remove unnecessary pressure and restore peace to our family.

With this in mind, what can we do to offer them the best education possible?

Set a savings goal for your children’s studies. No matter how much it is, what is important is the consistency of savings. Today the opportunities to receive a good education are almost limitless and for any budget, however, education costs. Any savings you put into education will be useful when yout children define what they want to study.

Encourage your children to combine a job with their studies. In school, knowledge is acquired (mainly), in a job, experience is obtained together with character training. No matter how expensive your child’s school is, it will never be better than practical experience.

Research scholarship options. There are schools that offer scholarships to outstanding students, there are government programs that offer scholarships as well, even many companies have internal programs to finance education of people who work for them. Many times the funds destined for student scholarships are left unused for not requesting them.

Ask for advice on insurance or savings accounts for education. An advantage of such a scheme is that you can deduct taxes with these tools. The observation to be made here is that, in such a scheme, it’s better to start early. If you start investing (saving) in children’s education early, you can practically send your children to any school.

The key to giving our children a good education depends more on wise planning than on a robust budget, Lord Jesus already taught:

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish” LUKE 14: 28-30

Investments

“Those who love money will not be satisfied with money, And those who love abundance will not be satisfied with profit. This, too, is vanity. When goods increase, those who consume them also increase. So what is the advantage to their owners, if not to see them with their eyes?”

Ecclesiastes 5:10-11

By: Cultura Financiera

Before affirming that investing money is legitimately biblical, we must answer the question: Is money evil? The answer is no! Morally, money is neutral; it is neither bad nor good. It can be used for good, just as it can also be used to do something terrible. The Bible does not condemn money itself, only its misuse.

The investment itself is not unbiblical. In the parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), God gave stewards according to their abilities and commanded them to manage their portions well. Each was rewarded or punished according to his stewardship.

The first two servants understood and practiced principles to multiply the resources they received. They used the lowest possible amount of funds to spend on consumer items. They invested the most significant amount possible in those things that could bring them the most important profit.

The purpose of investing is what makes it good or bad. As we learn to invest money according to God’s principles, we will discover that he will increase our opportunities to help others. That is the true purpose of investing: to increase your assets so that you can serve God and others more fully.

A legitimate purpose for any investment program is to help your family achieve a greater degree of security.

Although each family’s investment needs differ, common “principles” or “keys” can provide a solid foundation for anyone. Applying these keys to your financial plans will make your investment decisions more transparent.

Keys to investing well

Invest from what we have saved: “Prepare your work outside, and arrange it in your fields, and then you will build your house.”, Proverbs 24:27

Formulate clear investment objectives: No one should invest without having an ultimate purpose for the money. You must have a clear and definitive financial goal.

Do not speculate: What is assuming? Making unfounded assumptions, buying goods believed to increase in price to sell them and obtain a profit without work or effort.

Analyze options and the cost of each investment before investing: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Don’t you first calculate the cost to see if you have enough money to finish it? (Luke 14:28)

Avoid high-risk investments: I have seen a terrible evil in this life: accumulated wealth detrimental to its owner and wealth lost in a bad deal. And if its owner happens to have a child, he will no longer have anything to leave him. (Ecclesiastes 5:13-14)

Diversify investments: Share what you have among seven and even among eight because you do not know what calamity may come upon the earth. (Ecclesiastes 11:2)

Remember that greed and speed often go together: Patience is the key to avoiding greed. Well-thought-out plans: pure profit! (Proverbs 21:5)

From the biblical point of view, money and wealth are a blessing. Through them, the believer can meet all his needs, give to causes that honor the Lord, or be able to share with those who have less and suffer from some type of need. However, the warning of the Lord Jesus is evident: “We should not love riches,” and we should not put our hope in that which is destroyed.

Mateo 25:21

Financial education

“He who is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and he who is unjust in very little is also unjust in much. Who would trust you with what is true if you were not accurate in unrighteous riches?

Luke 16:10-11

When we first hear the expression “Financial Education,” many of us feel a mixture of curiosity and insecurity. We are attracted by discovering how this new system works, which promises to help us control the money “that flows through our hands like water.”

However, we are invaded by the insecurity of insufficient financial resources or the personal capacity necessary to implement a “plan to control our finances.”

We must recognize economic difficulties as a product of inefficient administration of the family economy derived from poor financial education.

These difficulties often bind and enslave us, and they have significant importance in our lives, but it is also vitally important to recognize that we can and must learn to free ourselves from these ties.

God loves us, and because he cares about us, he has given us guidelines in his word to manage money in the best way, and the way people handle money is the opposite of God’s financial principles.

The Bible has more than 2,350 verses that deal with managing money and possessions. Jesus taught more about money than any other topic, giving many explanations for spiritual and practical reasons.

Why should we educate ourselves financially?

God knows that money plays a predominant role in our lives, and because He loves us very much, He has given us guidelines to manage money wisely. The scripture reveals its principles about:

• The job
• The act of giving
• Expenses
• The savings
• Getting out of debt
• Investments
• The Heritage

You will find everything you need to know about money and possessions in the word of God. Unfortunately, most of us are not taught how he expects us to handle money.

As we mentioned at the beginning, the word of God speaks a lot about money, and the reason is that the way we manage our money is an external expression of an internal spiritual condition since it competes with Christ for the lordship of our lives.

Money and possessions are not bad, but a wrong attitude toward them is. You do not need to have much money, nor be a math teacher or accountant to perform specific calculations to have a “good financial education”; the most important thing is your initiative, curiosity, and patience. Today, there are hundreds of sites, pages, and books where you can obtain the necessary knowledge and, of course, the word of God.

“And his master said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant; You have been faithful over a few, I will make you ruler over many things; enter into the joy of your lord.”

Matthew 25:21

Reorganize your finances

Remember that where your heart is, there is your treasure.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on every area of your life, see your priorities, reinforce what you are doing well, and find the spaces where you need to make changes. Your finances are one of those areas where you may need to make adjustments.

It is always good to be aware of our financial situation to manage wisely and responsibly the resources we have been entrusted to manage.

The first thing you should do before making changes is to evaluate your current financial situation and review your income, expenses, debts, and savings. Identify areas for improvement and set clear and achievable goals for the coming year.

To achieve these goals, you must establish priorities. Remember that where your heart is, your treasure is; that means that we spend on what matters to us; your expenses reflect your preferences; therefore, check if your priorities align with your values and convictions.

Develop a realistic budget that reflects your monthly income and expenses. Be sure to allocate funds to savings, debt, and essential expenses. A well-planned budget will help you take control of your finances and avoid unpleasant surprises, as well as help you manage your resources effectively and avoid unnecessary debt.

Practice generosity

Don’t forget to practice generosity; we experience God’s blessing by giving to others. Include charity in your budget; you will see how your resources are sufficient for you and blessing others.

Seek God’s wisdom to reorganize your finances; remember that consistency is critical, and small actions throughout the year can make a big difference in your long-term financial well-being.

Make this the year you take complete control of your finances!
