Además de su lazo familiar, a las hermanas Karina y Diana Fernández las une su complicidad y la pasión por el boxeo
Dos de las mujeres más reconocidas en el deporte juarense, además de ser destacadas atletas, tienen en común pertenecer a la misma familia, los Fernández, quienes han encontrado en el boxeo un lazo que los une más allá de la sangre.
En esta edición, además de hablar del amor de pareja o la amistad entre seres humanos, haremos espacio a otro tipo de relación, la hermandad, la cual es perfectamente bien ejemplificada por Karina y Diana, dos exponentes del pugilismo fronterizo que han puesto en alto el nombre de esta ciudad.
Una historia conocida
Como muchas personas en Juárez, Karina y Diana (junto a su hermano mayor) crecieron dentro de un hogar de papás trabajadores, por lo que la primera tomó el mando de la dinámica familiar y era quien preparaba la comida y hasta peinaba a la más pequeña para ir a la escuela.
“Yo siempre vi a mi hermana como mi segunda mamá, ella siempre estaba al pendiente de mi”, cuenta “La Bonita”.
A lo anterior, “La Bella” agrega que su hermana menor era difícil a la hora de comer y no lo hacía a menos de que fuera ella misma quien le preparara los alimentos, su favorito era el arroz. Comparte que tenía que mentirle con respecto a la carne, pues no quería probarla por no lastimar a “las pobres vacas”.
“Debí haber sido vegana… por tu culpa no soy vegana”, reclama divertida Diana.
Ni los profesores las aguantaban
Su vida de pequeñas sin duda las hizo muy unidas y pese a los tres años y medio de diferencia entre ellas, cursaron juntas la preparatoria, un período de su vida en el que aceptan haber sido muy “vaguitas”, tanto que ni los profesores las aguantaban.
“Éramos un desastre en la prepa”, cuentan a Visionarias entre risas, pero aclaran que eso no les impedía cumplir y sacar buenas calificaciones.
Muestra de su complicidad es la anécdota de cuando al final de un semestre decidieron quemar -junto con sus amigas- todos sus libros en un parque, esto como muestra de rebeldía luego de que una profesora no dejara entrar a algunas de ellas al salón, al cual llegaron tarde por comprar un pastel de cumpleaños para Karina.
“Hemos sido de las que van siempre adelante en las travesuras”, dice Diana, quien reconoce que fue en esta etapa cuando comenzó a ver a Karina como “compa” y no sólo como a su hermana.
La Bella y la Bonita
A su paso por la preparatoria, Diana ya estaba inmersa en el mundo de los guantes, el cuadrilátero y las cuerdas, deporte que conoció cuando apenas tenía 12 años, tras seguir el ejemplo de su hermano Ricardo, de quien también gustaba imitar sus gustos musicales y hasta la forma de vestir.
“La pasión por el boxeo empezó muy pronto, empezó primero con nuestro hermano mayor, después conmigo que soy la más chica y después ya nos siguió Kari”, comparte la campeona.
Tras un mes de entrenar, Jorge “Bigotes” Mendoza, le consiguió su primera pelea y le apodó “La Bonita”, alias que no le parecía pues sentía que no representaba ningún temor para sus oponentes.
Dicha pelea la perdió, pero más allá de desmotivarla continuó entrenando y “(luego) empecé a ganar, a ganar y a ganar”, menciona orgullosa.
Sin embargo, la historia de Karina es diferente, pues eligió al deporte en lugar de continuar en una relación abusiva, donde los golpes siempre era ella quien los recibía.
“Cuando decidí separarme comencé en los tiempos libres que tenía (practicar box), a acompañar a mis hermanos, a verlos entrenar y dije ‘bueno, estoy aquí perdiendo el tiempo nada más viéndolos, mejor me voy a poner a hacer algo’… así el deporte me fue envolviendo”, asegura “La Bella”, apodo que también le fue asignado por “El Bigotes” y que tampoco era de su agrado, “pero salí un poco embarrada por ‘La Bonita’”, se ríen ambas.
Se tienen una a la otra
Años después las hermanas Fernández decidieron vivir juntas, momento en el que resurgió la dinámica en la que Karina hacía las veces de mamá y alimentaba a Diana, lo cual cimentó la relación y las volvió mejores amigas.
“Ella me tiene a mí, yo la tengo a ella… siempre la vida encuentra la manera de juntarnos”, dice Karina, y reafirma Diana, quien admira de su hermana su disciplina, tenacidad y perseverancia.
A lo anterior Karina responde que su hermana menor “es una mujer fuerte, decidida, con muchas virtudes”, lo cual le ayuda a la hora de desenvolverse.
Hoy en día, Karina y Diana, es decir, “La Bella” y “La Bonita”, llevan su hermandad con amor, complicidad y respeto, valores que esperan vean en ellas las cientos de niñas que las admiran y que les mandan cartas, notas y regalitos como muestra del cariño que se han ganado, lo que les representa una gran responsabilidad.
Es precisamente a ellas a quienes impulsan a no rendirse nunca, “lo más importante es luchar por los sueños, no echar en saco roto nada… nuestros problemas los enfocamos en el deporte, en algo que nos gusta, entonces, si tienes algún problema y te gusta estudiar, estudia tres veces más, si te gusta correr, corre tres veces más, todo para que enfoques tu energía mala en algo positivo”, concluye la mayor de las Fernández, quien es secundada por la menor, que recuerda que “si la familia es primero, Dios es la base”.

Champions of life
In addition to their family bond, sisters Karina and Diana Fernandez are united by their collaboration and passion for boxing.
Besides being outstanding athletes, two of the most recognized women in Juarisco’s sports have in common belonging to the same family, the Fernandez family, who have found in boxing a bond that unites them beyond blood.
In this edition, besides talking about the love of a couple or friendship between human beings, we will make room for another type of relationship, sisterhood, which is perfectly well exemplified by Karina and Diana, two exponents of border boxing who have put the name of this city on a high level.
A familiar story
Like many people in Juarez, Karina and Diana (along with her older brother) grew up in a working-parent household. Hence, the former took charge of the family dynamic and was the one who prepared the food and even combed the younger sister’s hair for school.
“I always saw my sister as my second mom; she was always looking out for me,” says “La Bonita.”
To the above, “La Bella” adds that her younger sister was difficult when it came to eating and would not do it unless she was the one who prepared the food for her; her favorite was rice. She shares that she had to lie to her about meat, as she didn’t want to try not to hurt “the poor cows.”
“I should have been vegan… because of you, I’m not vegan,” Diana claims, amused.
Even the teachers couldn’t stand them.
Their life as children undoubtedly made them very close. Despite the three and a half years of difference, they attended high school together, a period of their lives in which they admit to having been very “lazy,” so much so that not even the teachers could stand them.
“We were a disaster in high school,” they tell Visionarias with laughter, but they clarify that this did not prevent them from doing well and getting good grades.
An example of their complicity is the anecdote of when at the end of one semester, they decided to burn -together with their friends- all their books in a park as a sign of rebellion after a teacher did not allow some of them to enter the classroom, where they arrived late to buy a birthday cake for Karina.
“We have always been the ones who go ahead in the pranks,” says Diana, who recognizes that it was at this stage when she began to see Karina as “compa” and not just as her sister.
La Bella y la Bonita
While in high school, Diana was already immersed in the world of gloves, the ring and the ropes, a sport she learned about when she was just 12 years old after following the example of her brother Ricardo, whose musical tastes and even the way he dressed, she also liked to imitate.
“The passion for boxing started very early, it began first with our older brother, then with me as I am the youngest and then Kari already followed us,” shares the champion.
After a month of training, Jorge “Bigotes” Mendoza got her her first fight and nicknamed her “La Bonita,” an alias she didn’t like because she felt she didn’t represent any fear for her opponents.
She lost that fight, but beyond discouraging her, she continued training and “(then) I started winning, winning and winning,” she says proudly.
However, Karina’s story is different, as she chose sports instead of continuing in an abusive relationship, where she was always on the receiving end of the blows.
“When I decided to separate, I started in the free time I had (to practice boxing), to accompany my brothers, to watch them train, and I said, ‘well, I’m here wasting my time just watching them, I’d better start doing something.’ That’s how the sport got me involved”, says “La Bella,” a nickname that was also assigned to her by “El Bigotes” and that was not to her liking, “but I got a little muddy because of ‘La Bonita,'” they both laugh.
They have each other.
Years later, the Fernández sisters decided to live together. At that point, the dynamic resurfaced, with Karina acting as mom and feeding Diana, which cemented their relationship and made them best friends.
“She has me, I have her… life always finds a way to bring us together,” says Karina, and reaffirms Diana, who admires her sister’s discipline, tenacity and perseverance.
Karina responds that her younger sister “is a strong, determined woman with many virtues,” which helps her work.
Today, Karina and Diana, that is, “La Bella” and “La Bonita,” carry their sisterhood with love, complicity and respect, values that they hope the hundreds of girls who admire them and send them letters, notes and gifts as a token of the affection they have earned will see in them, which represents a great responsibility for them.
The most important thing is to fight for our dreams, not to throw anything away; we focus our problems on sports, on something we like. So if you have a problem and you like to study, study three times more if you want to run, run three times more so that you can focus your bad energy on something positive”, concludes the oldest Fernández, who is seconded by the youngest, who remembers that “if the family comes first, God is the base.”

Gabriela Téllez, es una reconocida presentadora de noticias en Ciudad Juárez y madre de dos hijos, se autodescribe como “una madre poco convencional”.
“Soy una mujer perteneciente a Ciudad Juárez, la adoro profundamente, soy de la idea de que tienes que amar este suelo que estás pisando, agradecer porque te da de comer, te da familia, te da la oportunidad de ver salir el sol, amo mi Ciudad Juárez”, declaró Téllez.
Gabriela relató a Revista Visionarias que trabajó por 10 años en la industria maquiladora, en donde admiraba a una mujer gerente de recursos humanos, quien tenían seguridad y porte, por lo que, su sueño era capacitar al personal en una empresa. Por ello, decidió estudiar Ciencias de la Comunicación, aunque irónicamente no se cumplió como tal ese sueño, logró pararse frente a un público e informar a la comunidad.
Nunca imaginó trabajar como conductora de noticias, sin embargo, por azares del destino llegó al Canal 44 y permaneció en la televisión durante 18 años.
Aunque en ese momento no era su plan quedarse, pues ya era madre y pensaba que no encajaba en ese puesto, la empresa le enseñó a maquillarse, peinarse, vestirse y hasta aceptar tú propia voz. “La gente piensa que se necesitan ciertas características para salir en la televisión, sin embargo, lo que se requiere es ser singular y diferente”, mencionó.
Como mujer y profesionista, Gaby considera que aún cuando tienes hijos, nada te tiene que detener, a pesar de que ella continuó trabajando por necesidad, también lo hizo porque no se veía sin trabajar, pues ella empezó su vida laboral desde los 15 años.
Destacó que, afortunadamente el Canal 44 le permitió seguir trabajando y compaginar su rol de madre, ya que podía cuidar a sus hijos, darles de comer, llevarlos a la escuela y trabajar por las noches. Sin embargo, acepto que fue complicado, porque la ciudad ha pasado por momentos difíciles.
Señaló que, es una mamá fuera de lo convencional, pues es estricta y por eso, impulsa a sus hijos a que no dependan de ella, y que sean autosuficientes. Sobre todo, porque sus hijos son varones, pues considera que como madre tienes que enseñarles a que sean hombres independientes, que aporten y sean valiosos para la sociedad, porque ellos mañana serán los líderes de su hogar.
Dios en su vida
“Para mi Dios es algo con lo que nacimos, soy de la idea de que, si lo pones en duda, y cuando lo pones en duda, al final ahí está, te encuentras que hay alguien más grande que tú”, comentó.
Un mensaje a las madres juarenses
Las madres debemos darnos permiso de detenernos y replantearnos el camino para seguir nuestros sueños, ya que como mujeres tenemos tantos cambios físicos, hormonales y emocionales.
“Ve por que cambios has pasado y si lo que tienes en este momento te gusta, sino te gusta, tenemos la obligación como personas de seguir creciendo y hacer ajustes a la nueva mujer en que te convertiste y la etapa en la que estás, no abandones tus sueños, muchas mujeres lo hacemos por que la vida nos va exigiendo cada vez más”, puntualizó Téllez.
An Unconventional Mom: Gaby Tellez
Gabriela Tellez, a renowned news anchor in Ciudad Juarez and a mother of two, describes herself as “an unconventional mother.”
“I am a woman who belongs to Ciudad Juarez. I adore it deeply. I believe that you must love this land you walk on, be grateful because it feeds you, gives you a family, gives you the opportunity to see the sunrise. I love my Ciudad Juarez,” Tellez declared.
Gabriela told Visionarias Magazine that she worked for 10 years in the maquiladora industry, where she admired a female human resources manager who had confidence and poise. Her dream was to train staff at a company. Because of this, she decided to study Communications Sciences. Although, ironically, that dream didn’t come true, she managed to stand in front of an audience and inform the community.
She never imagined working as a news anchor, but by chance, she ended up at Channel 44 and remained in television for 18 years.
Although at the time it wasn’t her plan to stay, as she was already a mother and thought she didn’t fit in the position, the company taught her how to apply makeup, style her hair, dress, and even embrace her own voice. “People think you need certain characteristics to appear on television, but what you need is to be unique and different,” she said.
As a woman and a professional, Gaby believes that even when you have children, nothing should stop you. Although she continued working out of necessity, she also did so because she couldn’t see herself going without work, as she began her career at the age of 15.
She emphasized that, fortunately, Channel 44 allowed her to continue working and balance her role as a mother, as she was able to take care of her children, feed them, take them to school, and work nights. However, she accepted that it was complicated because the city has been through difficult times.
She noted that she is an unconventional mother, as she is strict and therefore encourages her children not to depend on her and to be self-sufficient. Especially because her children are boys, she believes that as a mother you must teach them to be independent men, who contribute and are valuable to society, because tomorrow they will be the leaders of their homes.
God in Her Life
“For me, God is something we were born with. I believe that if you question it, and when you question it, in the end, it’s there, you find that there is someone greater than you,” she commented.
A Message to the mothers of Juarez
As mothers, we must give ourselves permission to stop and rethink the path to follow our dreams, since as women we go through so many physical, hormonal, and emotional changes.
“Look at the changes you’ve gone through and see if you like what you have right now. If you don’t, we have an obligation as people to continue growing and adjusting the new woman you’ve become and the stage, you’re in. Don’t give up on your dreams. Many women do it because life demands more and more of us,” Tellez said.
El trabajo en equipo y la organización son las herramientas clave para su labor
Reconocida en la frontera como la mejor wedding planner de Ciudad Juárez, Laura Sánchez comparte con Visionarias su estrategia para mantenerse en lo más alto de la organización de eventos, al tiempo que debe seguir siendo madre y esposa al 100 por ciento.
Esta mujer visionaria nos dice que el secreto está en el tiempo y en trabajar en equipo con su familia para que ella pueda cumplir con su oficio, el cual comenzó a desempeñar en 2016.
Recuerda que fundó Decco Event Planning and Design luego de asistir a una boda en la Ciudad de Chihuahua, donde se fijó en todos los detalles, la organización y decoración, algo que siempre le interesó.
Pero para lograrlo no sólo bastaba con querer hacerlo, tenía que organizarse para seguir cumpliendo con su rol de mamá, así como esposa, por lo que el tiempo fue su mayor reto, ya que ahora también debía acoplarse a la disponibilidad de sus clientes.
Sin embargo, gracias al apoyo de su marido y su fe en Dios a sabido llevarlo a cabo, “Dios siempre ha estado conmigo, cada día me sorprende más de cómo ha estado conmigo, yo siempre digo ‘gracias, Dios’, porque hasta yo misma me sorprendo; digo ‘gracias, Dios, porque estuviste aquí y esto tú me guiaste’, Dios me guió para hacer todo esto”, dice.
Sus hijos, su mayor proyecto
Para Laura, “ser madre es algo muy bonito”, asegura que junto con ello, su familia se ha convertido en un equipo cuyo objetivo final es hacer de sus hijos buenas personas, con valores y principios, además de la gratificación que tiene al sentirse admirada por sus hijos.
Es por lo anterior que siempre busca darles el mejor ejemplo para que en un futuro sepan valorar a las mujeres de su vida.
“Yo tengo dos niños varones y darles ese ejemplo a mis hijos siento que a ellos les va a influir mucho en su vida con su pareja o matrimonio para que ellos acepten que también como mujer tenemos la misma oportunidad”, dice.
Y por esas mismas oportunidades es que envía un sincero mensaje, “crean… cuando uno cree en uno mismo sacamos maravillas de nosotras mismas, que a veces nosotras mismas nos impresionamos, dudamos tanto y muchas veces nos opacan, pero sí puedo”, agrega.

Laura Sánchez With time on her side
Teamwork and organization are key tools for her work.
Recognized on the border as the best wedding planner in Ciudad Juárez, Laura Sánchez shares with Visionarias her strategy for staying at the top of the event planning game while remaining a 100 percent mother and wife.
This visionary woman tells us that the secret lies in time and working as a team with her family so she can fulfill her profession, which she began in 2016.
She recalls that she founded Decco Event Planning and Design after attending a wedding in Chihuahua City, where she focused on every detail, the organization, and the decoration, something that had always interested her.
But to achieve this, it wasn’t enough just to want to do it; she had to organize herself to continue fulfilling her role as mother, as well as wife. Therefore, time was her biggest challenge, as she now also had to accommodate her clients’ availability. However, thanks to her husband’s support and her faith in God, she has been able to carry it out. “God has always been with me. Every day I am more surprised by how He has been with me. I always say, ‘thank you, God,’ because even I am surprised. I say, ‘thank you, God, because you were here, and you guided me through this.’ God guided me to do all of this,” she says.
Her Children, Her Greatest Project
For Laura, “being a mother is a beautiful thing.” She asserts that, along with this, her family has become a team whose ultimate goal is to raise their children into good people, with values and principles, in addition to the gratification she gets from feeling admired by them.
This is why she always strives to set the best example for them so that in the future they will know how to value the women in their lives.
“I have two boys, and setting that example for my children, I feel, will greatly influence them in their lives with their partners or marriages, so that they will accept that as women, we also have the same opportunities,” she says.
And it is through these same opportunities that she sends a sincere message: “Believe… when you believe in yourself, we bring out wonders in ourselves. Sometimes we impress ourselves, we doubt ourselves so much, and many times we are overshadowed, but yes, I can do it,” she adds.

Especialistas que trabajan con el corazón
“De las cosas más bonitas que hay en este mundo, es que yo tengo la oportunidad de tocar los corazones directamente, literal, yo creo que ese es un privilegio que no tiene nadie, para mí es de las cosas más hermosas que yo puedo tener en mi vida”, nos dice la doctora Alejandra Apodaca, cirujana cardiotorácica, quien junto al cardiólogo intervencionista Carlos Becerra, es fundadora de Cardio Clinic.
Desde hace tres años esta unidad de diagnóstico y tratamiento cardiovascular se ha encargado de prevenir, devolver y mantener la salud de hombres y mujeres en riesgo en cuanto a enfermedades del corazón se refiere.
Aquí usted puede encontrar en Cardio Met, una unidad de rehabilitación cardiaca y cardiometabólica enfocada en pacientes con algún cateterismo, evento cardiovascular o insuficiencia, o que ya pasaron por una cirugía a corazón abierto.
Cabe destacar que las enfermedades cardiovasculares son la principal causa de muerte en el mundo, pues al ser un padecimiento silencioso quienes lo padecen no lo saben hasta que debe ser atendidos en un hospital, por lo que la doctora Apodaca recomienda llevar a cabo un checkup periódico, sobre todo quienes ya tienen más de 40 años, o en las mujeres, después de la menopausia, pues es cuando se corren más riesgos.
Los tratamientos también incluyen planes alimenticios, cuidado de la salud mental y ejercicio físico, un sistema completo para el beneficio de los pacientes, para quienes se busca que su experiencia en esta unidad sea siempre agradable, “nosotros aquí vivimos para la atención del paciente”, dice la cardiocirujana, quien espera que en los próximos años la plantilla médica, así como este lugar, crezcan y puedan ayudar a recuperar la salud de tantos pacientes como les sea posible.

“One of the most beautiful things in this world is that I have the opportunity to touch hearts directly, literally. I believe that is a privilege that no one else has. For me, it is one of the most beautiful things I can have in my life,” says Dr. Alejandra Apodaca, cardiothoracic surgeon, who, along with interventional cardiologist Carlos Becerra, is the founder of Cardio Clinic.
For three years, this cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment unit has been dedicated to preventing, restoring, and maintaining the health of men and women at risk for heart disease.
Here, you can find Cardio Met, a cardiac and cardiometabolic rehabilitation unit focused on patients with catheterization, cardiovascular events, or heart failure, or who have already undergone open-heart surgery.
It’s important to note that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Because it is a silent disease, those who suffer from it don’t know it until they need to be treated in a hospital.
